Training Marines, Developing Leaders

Visiting Families,

As your new Marine prepares to report to their first command here at The Basic School, we want to first extend a thank you for the courage and sacrifice that your family has made. No Marine makes it here on their own, and the support that prepared them to take on this challenge is the same support they will require here at TBS, and well into their career as a Marine.

When your Marine reports to Camp Barrett, they are not just attending their next school or course. Arriving at TBS is likely the first time they are checking into a Marine Corps command. As such, they will take on new responsibilities, one of which is acting as your primary point of contact for information regarding their training and well-being. By communicating with your Marine, he or she will be able to speak with their chain of command to answer any of the following:

  • Emergency Points of Contact (who you can reach out to when your Marine is in the field and needs to receive an urgent message)

  • Information about planned training- it is their responsibility to keep you informed of their availability

  • Family Readiness events

  • Resource information (Chaplain, housing, etc)

What is Family Day?

  • Prior to graduating, our courses will typically host a “Family Day” aboard Camp Barrett, often the day prior to graduating. This is a day for families and friends to see where their Marines have been training, meet the Marines and Sailors who have trained them, and maybe even handle some gear and equipment that Marines use regularly.

Graduation Day!

  • Graduation ceremonies are an opportunity for you and your Marine to recognize and celebrate their accomplishment. All Marine officers, regardless of Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), have walked across a stage, symbolizing their readiness to lead Marines in the Fleet Marine Force.
  • For those families who are attending graduation with a VIP, it is extremely important that your Marine communicate to their company the rank, name, and total number in their party in order to allow TBS to appropriately accommodate.

For both of these events, your Marine’s training company will request information from them to be used to grant base access, accommodate VIP guests, and appropriately disseminate information. Expect to have this conversation with your Marine roughly two months before they graduate.
