Major Jared D. Pennywell graduated from Southern University A&M College with a degree in Business Management concentrating in Supply Chain Management in 2013. He commissioned in January 2014 and reported to The Basic School (TBS) in October 2014. He graduated from TBS in May 2015 and reported to the Field Artillery Basic Officer Leader's Course (FABOLC) in Fort Sill, Oklahoma graduating in December 2015.
Upon completion of FABOLC, he reported to 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was assigned to Battery B as a Guns Platoon Commander. In February 2016, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of Unit Deployment Program 16.1. Upon redeployment in August 2016, he was reassigned to Fire Support Platoon to serve as a Company Fire Support Officer for Company C, 1st Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment and as a Company and Battalion Fire Support Officer for 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment.
In July 2017, he was assigned to 8th Marine Regiment to serve as a Battle Captain with Task Force Southwest (TFSW) 18.1. In December 2017, he deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan with TFSW in support of Operation FREEDOM SENTINEL and NATO's Resolute Support Mission. As the night Battle Captain, he was responsible for coordinating ISR and CAS overwatch of ANDSF positions and responding to immediate request for support during periods of darkness.
In January 2019, he reported to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group-Atlantic to serve in the Expeditionary Fires Department as the Fire Support Coordinator's Course Manager. During his tenure, he was responsible for providing doctrinal fire support planning and execution training to joint, coalition and special operations forces.
In July 2021, he reported to Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia as a student. Upon graduation in May 2022, he reported to 2d Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment and served as the Commanding Officer, Battery F until February 2023. During this tour, he transitioned the battery from M777A2 howitzers to HIMARS aligning the unit with Force Design 2030.
In March 2023, he was selected to deploy as a Joint Individual Augment, serving as the Chief of Fires and Effects for Security Assistance Group-Ukraine, United States European Command in support of Operation ATLANTIC RESOLVE. Upon his return from deployment in September 2023, he was assigned to Fire Support Battery, 10th Marine Regiment to serve as 2d Marine Regiment's Fire Support Coordinator. Throughout his assignment, he developed comprehensive training packages that supported simultaneous Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluations and 2d Marine Division’s inaugural artillery focused, Division Leaders Assessment Program.
In July 2024, he reported to The Basic School for service as the Executive Officer, Combat Instructor Battalion.
Major Pennywell is the recipient of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and (3) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.
